How to choose a bookkeeper you can trust

Your bookkeeper sees everything. Here's what to look for beyond price when you're handing over the keys to your numbers.

01

Registration and rigour

If your bookkeeper lodges BAS, they should be a registered BAS agent with the Tax Practitioners Board. Ask. It signals they meet professional standards and carry the right obligations.

02

A rhythm, not a rescue

The best bookkeeping is boring — steady, weekly, predictable. Be wary of anyone whose model is quarterly heroics. You want a partner who keeps you current, not one who charges to dig you out each quarter.

03

Plain language

A good bookkeeper explains your numbers in words you understand. If every conversation leaves you more confused, that's a red flag, not a sign of expertise.

04

The human factor

You're trusting this person with the financial heartbeat of your business. You should have a named contact who knows your name, your business and your quirks — not a ticket number.

Price matters, but trust and consistency matter more. Cheap bookkeeping that falls behind costs far more than it saves.
